Todd Knopke SOL (2024) Fabric, Thread

About: Todd Knopke's practice uniquely blends the American tradition of quilting with the European tradition of tapestry making, infusing them with contemporary concepts of collage, painting, and sculpture. His work explores the versatility and ubiquity of fabric as a medium, creating monumental yet lightweight and flexible pieces that can transform from flat, opaque wall hangings to luminous, supple forms reminiscent of stained glass.

Knopke's current focus revolves around repurposing used clothing, sheets, and towels from friends and family. This choice of materials adds layers of meaning to his work, as each piece of fabric carries with it the history, personality, and experiences of its previous owner. The artist sees this as a form of quiet power, akin to the use of personal items in voodoo practices, imbuing his creations with a sense of transformation and hidden energy.

By using recognizable elements like shirt collars, Knopke creates a perceptual shift in the viewer's mind, blurring the lines between a collage of real, lived objects and representations of something entirely new. His work invites contemplation on the nature of materiality, personal history, and the transformative power of art.
